Red Scarf Girl
A Memoir of the Cultural Revolution
By Ji-li Jiang
My reactions to the book just keeps getting more and more shocking because i didnt expect Jiang's family to be in a big problem. More and more things that are bad keeps on happening near Jiang but now things are being bad for Jiang and her family. I'm shock that even though her family id suffering, they dont realize that Chairman Mao id a bad person. I felt like they have been fool, but i guess that does happen in real life too. But it's just that all the people have turn against eachother and are being mad and mean to each other, even the peole that are close to the poeple who are torturing each other. Some how I felt like things are going to be resolve but the ending didnt end as I expected. I was really into the book and i was looking forward to how this situaion will be solve but the ending reallie surprise me. There was no solutions at at when I finish the end of the book. The only solutions was that after Chaiman Mao die, that's when people styart to realize that they have all been fool by their beloved Chairman Mao. They just couldnt believe how they can be under his spell for so long to have turn agingt all their trusted people. It makes me so made that the poele have just realize all the foolishness that Chairman Mao have done the them, Many poeple have lost their future because of him, many people was torture, suffer, and die just because of Chairman Mao. It makes me so mad that no one have realize it at all until be die, that mean no one will be able to make Chairman know his guiltiness ever since he have fool everyone, making everyone love him and believe in him until he pass away.
Jiang's family have gone through alot since her dad is being held for struggle meeting, those are meeting to make people admit somthing that they have done wrong. Jiang's family is always being questions about their dad and their family background. One day, their family was in the newspaper, it was said that they were landlords that owns 3300 acres of land, that they must be rich and very mean to the people back than. Jiang couldnt believe what was happening. Jiang felt so betray that her family had hid this kind of informations from her. Jiang hated her family for being landloards, because that is what is people dislike, landlord people. They belive they are evil for making people pay them for lands, they are seen as evil, baing mean to the people and whipping them, etc.Jiang was so sad nad mad that she almost change her last name but decided not to because she dont want to lost ties with her family but just want to not be apart of the landlord generation. During the exhibition, Jiang prsent a story about a bad landlord, which Chaiman MAo was there to see. The principle Cahirman Jin wanted to talk to Jiang and Jiang found out that the people from her dad's work place was there to make her goand support to a struggle meeting where people critize and force her dad to admit. Jiang didnt want to . The next day at the exhibition meeting, she was told that they found a replace ment for her already because of her family issue. School was to have their students go work at the farmland field (country side to do labor) or to go work at the factory. Jiang wanted to work at the factory to make sure she's close to her family but Chong Hong convince her to go to the country side since it'll be a better meaning that she is still with Chairman Mao. Jiang fainted at the field and was told that she have to go back home since the people from her dad's work place wanted to question her again. Jiang went home and their uncle Fan gave them a very important paper to review their dad's case if he was really at fault but the people from their dad's work place found the letter hidden in their home and made their 70 year old grandma sweep the alley at leveryday like other people and her mom was to report to her work what happen she that she is apart of the struggle meeting. Jiang decided to keep living and support her family even though they have gone through so much. This is the end. sad and torturing. No lovely happily ending.
I like the passage from Jiang, "It was my turn to take care of them." This passage meant that Jiang have already promise to take care of her family a long long time agao, and she realize she couldnt really do it, but she still have hope and will still look after her grandma and mom since she is the oldest daughter and the only one from her siblings who can take care of them all. This passage is so touching that it just make me feel so sad and bad for her. I envy her for being strong.
