Red Scarf Girl
A Memior of the Cultural Revolution
By Ji-li Jiang
This book just amaze me through out the whole time. Because from my reactions to my hopes of what is going to happen next was as What I had expected at all. This book causes me to feel pain, sad, almost at tears, mad, angry, etc. I guess maybe I'm asian too, haha, maybe that is why I feel so affected. But I didnt think that i'll be into this kind of book, since I'm not a history type of person. But I do know that I like to heard sad storys of what tradgedys that people had encounter. So maybe that is why I feel so touch by this book.
The author Jiang used great details describing what happen and she used all kinds of emotions to atrracts us as the reader's attention. I like how Jiang describe the situation and their feelings of intenseness through out the whole book. She also describe their hopes and dreams that are crush but they are still looking forward to it. Jiang know when to used describtive images along with feeling to make us be drawn deeply into the scene. Her style of seeting is a great way to understand the whole place and to feel like we know every singo places that she mention because Jiang doesn't add on many places but focus on one main spot. Which is her own town village. This helps us not to go back and look up the place where it last happen. Jiang does a great job of not jumping from one scene to another. She finish off the scene with a bad ending and then it leads to another. For example, At Jiang's school, She was elected to try out for one of the red guard, and cant wait to go home and tell her family so she rush home and at the door, Jiang was supper happy that she started to greet her siblings like a army woman. This flows softly from one setting to another. It didnt just jump that she was at school then all of a sudden she is home. Her ways of placing the flow of one setting to the next makes us as the reader feel like we were there with her the whole time, experiencing her whole tradgy life. This mades the book easier to read and makes us more focus into the book. It makes us as the reader to not have any problems of going back and pondering what happen or ponder about the confusing scene.
There are many passages that I liked. But here is one that I like the best. One of the passage that I like is one page, 263, "Another day." I took a deep pbreath and shook my head. " I will do my job. I will."
This passage is the very ending of the book. It leaves me a good empression because I believe that this passage meant that she know that there is another day of misery. Though Jiang will do her best o take care of her grandma, mother and her sibling. That she will not give up living and will continue to be strong. I like this passage because of her strong will heart. She will be there for her family and not a lot of this is happening in America today because not many family gone through these king of tradgey anymore. I'm not saying there isnt any but it's just that many people give up nowdays. And in her situation, it was super hard for her and she is a girl in her family though she try and try through hard and bad time. There are times when she wanted to give up but she didnt and I felt so proud for her. It just boost up my couage to believe in my self more and more. To learn from her and be a even better me.
