A memoir of the Cultural Revolution
A memoir of the Cultural Revolution
Book by Ji-Li Jiang
What was my reaction of the book? Well first of all, when I very first saw the book, I thought that the book must be boring because of the dull red color of the cover and the photo on the cover is a old sort of white and black photo. But the heading, a memoir of the cultural revolution made me ponder what the book must be about, since I haven't read the book at all, I decided to choose this book as my memoir book, I thought it might be interesting. When i first read the book, I thought, it wasn't as bad as I thought because the author made the first paragraph very bright and positive. The author made the book seem like a cheerful book instead of a boring and slow sad beginning. That is what kept me reading on and on. The author focus her thought through out the story and made me feel her a lot, showing her emotions and her beliefs, clearly state the things she feel. All those emotions draws me deeply into the book and I felt like I was a pat of it. The author also made me feel like I was wondering what is going to happen next. Since the whole begging is super cheerful, I felt like there is something bad that is going to happen to surprise us or change the mood. That is exactly what happen and those feelings makes me just want to finish the book in one day.
So far, in the beginning of the book, the mood was super bright and cheerful. The main person of the memoir is Ji-li Jiang, as you an see, it's a memoir of her as a young girl. Age 12 and in 6th grade, Ji-li felt like she have always been loved and she felt like her family have everything and that they are super lucky. It was during class that a Liberation Army woman came to her school and tested a few students and even Ji-li. Ji-li happen to pass the army woman's test and the principle and the army woman wanted her to audition for the dance training class. Ji-li went home excited to tell everyone in her family what happen that day but sadly, Ji-li's elder didn't approve. He said Ji-li wont understand now, and it's completive and they will surly look into their background. Ji-li's dream of everything was crush. she felt like her family was perfect until now. Next, people are breaking the sign at the Great Prosperity Market. To make new custom. Her grandma was disappointed. Ji-li thought it was good to get used to new custom. But at school, students tolerate one another if one was to wear old custom and it started to get out of hand. Writing a da-zi-bao about Ji-li and a teacher in a relationship, An Yi's (Ji-li's close friend) family. Finally Red Guards rebel against the old system and everything was fresh again.
